The McMeen Community Garden was established seven years ago in partnership with the non-profits Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) and Big Green. The garden is used by both students and community gardeners from early spring through fall. Over the years, students have participated in Garden Club as an after school program and learned how to successfully cultivate both flower and vegetable gardens, landscaping, healthy eating, pollinators and a variety of other topics. In addition, students have participated in cooking lessons and learned culinary skills while preparing vegetables harvested directly from the garden. For many years, McMeen also participated in the Garden-to-Cafeteria program where students harvest produce they grew which was then incorporated into school menus. As a result, students school-wide had the opportunity to eat fresh vegetables at lunch time that were grown by their classmates.
