Value of the Month: Perseverance

Posted April 1, 2025

At McMeen, we work with an organization called Capturing Kids’ Hearts to help our students grow into leaders! As a part of this work, we promote a different value each month. In April, we’re focusing on perseverance.

Perseverance is the ability to keep going, even when things get hard. This is especially relevant at the end of the school year! It may feel tempting to slack a bit on homework or show up to school a little late. But every minute in school is so important; we are teaching new content every day! With a little perseverance, your student can finish the school year strong.

As we promote perseverance at school, consider trying these methods to promote perseverance at home with your Mustang:

1. Teach Your Child the Power of “Yet”

Whenever you heard your child say “I can’t do it,” remind them to add “yet” to the end of that sentence. “I can’t do it yet” is a very powerful phrase. It teaches your child that it’s okay to fail because failure is not permanent. If they’re not good at something, they can become good at it!

2. Break Tasks Into Smaller Steps

Big tasks can be overwhelming for children. Help them break assignments or chores into smaller, manageable parts. Perseverance is easier when the task seems more manageable!

3. Set Up a Perseverance Jar

Set up a “perseverance jar” to celebrate your child when they push through difficult situations! All you need is a jar (you can use a cleaned-out jam or soup jar) and some small items (like marbles or buttons). Every time your child pushes through a challenge, add a marble to the jar. When the jar is full, you can reward your child with an educational prize. We recommend giving your child a book – bonus points if it’s a book with themes of perseverance!
