Value of the Month: Responsibility

We’re working with an organization called Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) to empower McMeen students to grow into leaders. As a part of this work, every month we focus on a specific value here at McMeen. During December, we will be focusing on responsibility.

We’ve been promoting responsibility here at school, and as we head into break, we hope you’ll continue to promote responsibility at home with your child!

Here are some ways you might encourage your child to be responsible:

• Model responsible behavior: You can model responsibility for your child by keeping promises and being accountable for your actions. For example, if you make a mistake, talk to your child about how you will acknowledge and correct it. This will help your child see how to handle their own responsibilities.

• Give your child age-appropriate tasks: Help your child practice responsibility by giving them tasks to take the lead on. For example, this could involve feeding pets or putting away their toys. You might talk to them about why it’s important that they take responsibility for these tasks. Be sure to acknowledge their efforts with praise! (i.e., “I’m proud of how you remembered to take out the trash on your own.”)

• Encourage self-reflection: As you help your child take on more responsibility around the house, be sure to take time to reflect with them. You can ask them questions like: “How do you feel when you take responsibility for your tasks?” or “How do you think you handled your responsibilities this week?”
